pyrit batch processing much slower than indicated and slower than previously experienced

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. import passwords into file:// database
2. start "pyrit batch"

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Based on the displayed speed in PMK/s and the number of unprocessed passwords, 
batch processing should take less than 3 minutes.  Instead, it will take 
several hours.  In the time it's taking me to enter this report, batch 
processing has advanced from 25% to 27%.  With an initial run of approximately 
7 million passwords, the PMK/s rate seemed accurate to the time necessary to 
complete batch processing.  Now if I were to import such a list, it would take 
weeks.
