Can be local on a timer, since new comics go up like clockwork (appears to be MWF at midnight eastern time).

Should be disable-able in Settings.

Today is making me think twice about the schedule. It's 1AM and there's no comic yet...

Huh. I'd've thought they'd automate release. Well, I'm ok with doing the easy thing and just delaying a few hours. I'm also open to other ideas. (I wonder whether there is a clever way to find out the release times for previous comics to learn the time distribution; maybe cache headers or first mention on twitter or...)

Fixed merged in 15a64e1db52640190f0aa421b36db065812a97b5, although a new iOS 7 multitasking improvement might be nice in the future.
