Much easier to get students to where they can produce results than with code. Training videos can be assigned as homework. You can teach the data skills in conjunction with the software skills very easily, but definitely would take away from time teaching code. I would stick to teaching code if that's what you are doing. Commercial product, but also gets students used to thinking about visualization, data exploration, data aggregation and other concepts that can be applied to other products or SQL work.
Worth teaching Tableau too? There are free licenses available and pre-existing teaching materials
Pros:
probably much easier than code (maybe?)
used a lot out in the real world, something students have a good chance of seeing in practice
Cons:
Any time spent teaching non-code methods of doing things takes away an opportunity to learn code skills as well as data skills
Commercial tool lock-in (I'm not a big fan of subjecting students to the expensive software drug dealer ('the first hit is free, then you gotta pay...') marketing strategy)
