VLC 2.1.0: no info/album art, no volume, no timeline

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. just using the program with VLC
2.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I don't get any information on my phone, I can still control VLC. The 
title/artist/... isn't showing on my phone.

The timeline (progress in the video) I can advance about a min in the video but 
if the video is longer than that, the remote can't go that far. Also it isn't 
showing the progress like it is doing on my PC.

The volume slider works when I adjust it on my phone but when I just play a 
video, there is no indication on my phone at what volume my PC is playing.

I've got this problem as well. 

VLC: v2.1.2
VLC remote: v0.5.7
Android: v4.3.1 (Cyanogenmod)
Device: Samsung Galaxy S2 (I9100)

Please let me know if I can somehow be of assistance in fixing/debugging this.

I have this issue as well. No other function besides the control buttons 
(previous/play/next) and volume works. All other features do not work 
(playlist, library and timeline). 

VLC 2.3.1
Remote for VLC 0.5.7
Android 4.2.2
HTC One X+
