Project dead? #378

Open carbon-C0DE opened 2 years ago

carbon-C0DE commented 2 years ago

hi @pawelmalak

i really like the look of flame , but i see there is a build up of bugs and pull requests, and no recent commit activity for quite some months.

is this project dead?

i noticed that you're the only collaborator. maybe you should add some more trusted users as project collaborators , so they can help you approve pull requests , triage issues and work on bug fixes and new features.

In the meantime in case anyone in same situation as me; I am making a dashboard comparison website here: https://github.com/carbon-C0DE/selfhosted-dashboards

Thanks for the work!

I would be happy to help with reviewing pull requests, and assist with triaging issues. I am already doing plenty of this for other repos, so have enough experience in the area.

Another option, is for someone to fork the repo, and apply bug fixes, update dependencies, deal with issues, review incoming pull requests and maybe continue to develop new features. They would need to be reasonably familiar with Node.js, React and TS.

@pawelmalak your project is popular, so keeping users informed about the development status is important. If the project is no longer under active development, that's fine too, but it's a good idea to still keep dependencies up-to-date, and be open to accepting contributions from the community.

I looked at each of the projects on the dashboard comparison wiki mentioned above and for my needs the Flame dashboard is the winner! I hope this project doesn’t die.

fdarveau commented 2 years ago

Unfortunately, on adding more collaborators to the project, I don't think @pawelmalak would be too open to the idea since he seems to have some pretty strong vision on this project and won't add features requested over and over based on that vision (see https://github.com/pawelmalak/flame/issues/7#issuecomment-857549138 and all other issues asking for app categories as an example)

ilium007 commented 2 years ago

Then just fork the project and start over…

fdarveau commented 2 years ago

I forked it already a few months ago to add app categories, but I have no plans to maintain it further than bug fixes when I encounter any and updates to this repo : https://github.com/fdarveau/flame

I offered to open a PR to merge my changes into this repo (see other issue I linked above), but never got a positive answer and noticed he seems to be completely against adding app categories when checking the following issues on the subject.

Oh man thank you for this...Dashy looks awesome!!! Seeing that was the final push I needed to pull the plug on Flame and crank on setting up something new

There is no polite way to re-ask for a status update that doesn't sound disingenuous but I really love this project. It is elegant, performant, rock solid and with the exception of multi user support feature complete for my use case.

However as the world moves on all software invariably needs patched to stay secure and I am starting to get worried that I may have to start planning for a replacement.

Is this project truly dead?

Has anyone considered a maintenance only fork since dependabot seems to be plodding along raising dep PRs?

Update: 23-05-2023 I have moved to https://github.com/benphelps/homepage which apart from the lack of any multiuser support can be made to be as elegant ad Flame and is more featureful. I would like to thank the developers of Flame for their work and wish them the best in the future.

Been using since the beginning for the reason you had outlined. Would also love to see any developer involvement, be it only security patching.

If it is dead, here's an alternative

https://github.com/benphelps/homepage

gitcatpeter commented 2 years ago

It's the 21st century for heaven's sake. Configuration should (also) be done in GUI mode ;-)

Very disappointed to see this project is dead. I'm migrating to fdarveau's fork as app categories is the #1 feature that's missing.

I mean, Docker labels is where it should be, not in the GUI.

GUI changes are difficult to re-apply elsewhere, and difficult to backup your configs.
