First of all, I have reason to think that you did not in fact try:
- [X] Running Rufus on a different computer.
At any rate, your issue is most likely that you altered the default Windows configuration to use a temporary folder that isn't located on the system drive. Possibly, because it's not on the Windows system partition, your R:\TEMP
drive uses a file system that does not allow symbolic links (such as FAT32) hence the error.
If you move your temporary directory back to the system disk, or actually test on a different computer (that hasn't been altered to deviate from a vanilla Windows configuration when it comes to temporary drive) you should find that your error goes away.
And, before you ask, no, I cannot fix that in Rufus, since Rufus relies on Windows being able to mount WIM image, which it can only do if the mountpoint resides on a drive that allows symbolic links, and I am not going to add scanning of a user's computer to try to to use a directory that resides outside of the well established TEMP directory, that is designed precisely for temporary creation of files, folders or mountpoints.
That' s a possible solution! In fact, I'm a fan of using a RAM-Disk for the temp-Directory (to avoid unnecessarible writings on my SSDs), which I installed on nearly all my computers, so similar conditions on all my devices.. Thanks for the analysis! Regards, Linuss
