Centos 7 .iso #380

Closed BlackMagic closed 9 years ago

BlackMagic commented 10 years ago

I've used rufus successfully in the past to create bootable usbs. Creating a bootable usb for Centos-7.0-1406-x86_64-Minimal.iso works but the usb gives the following message on boot: SYSLINUX 4.07 blah, blah, blah Unknown keyboard in configuration file: U?U? No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found! boot:

I created the usb with only one box ticked - Create a bootable usb with ISO image. rawrite creates a bootable usb for Centos7 Minimal install and it works, so the issue is not the contents of the source iso file.

pbatard commented 10 years ago

I just tested Centos-7.0-1406-x86_64-Minimal.iso on 3 different machines and I found no issues.

Either your USB has an issue or there is something on your target computer that syslinux doesn't like. What happens if you try a different USB drive or boot a different computer?

BlackMagic commented 10 years ago

Thanks for getting back to me.

I flushed the USB a few times, removing everything from it, before transferring the Centos7 image. The target machine is a notebook with Centos 6.? installed on the hard drive.

I'll try again over the weekend and let you know the outcome. I have a couple of different laptop machines I can test with.

MJR

Hi Pete,

Your diagnosis was correct. The problem was caused by a faulty USB drive.

When I did a scan on the USB rufus found 256 bad blocks, but when I elected to create an iso image on the USB rufus ignored the bad blocks and copied the iso information to the USB, after doing a slow format. Shouldn't the slow format have picked up the bad blocks?

My statement that rawrite works was correct, except that I was using a different USB drive when I used rawrite.

Thanks for your assistance. I've learned to scan USBs before using them to created bootable images.

Shouldn't the slow format have picked up the bad blocks?

I'm afraid not. Slow format doesn't verify data any more than quick format. The only difference between slow and quick format is that slow will fill each individual data block on the device with zeroes (without verifying the data being written), whereas quick format just overwrites a few index blocks to indicate that the device can be considered empty (but without erasing each individual data block).

I may add a verify write option in a future version of Rufus, but this is not a very high priority feature right now.

I will however keep this issue opened for now, to remind me that I need to look at the following errors:

libcdio: from_733: broken byte order

I had observed those as well when testing, and, while I believe they are benign, I'd still like to get these messages removed.

Pete, I jumped the gun in reporting the problem solved. I was so relieved to get past the initial problem I assumed the init script would bring up the gui that allows me to configure Centos 7.

The init script stalled and when I pressed escape I got an error message and advice to run journalctl. I'll send you more detail this evening when I've had a chance to study the error messages in the journal.

I ran rawrite on the same USB and it works fine and I was prepared to let the matter rest as I had a working solution, but since you've observed another issue with the build I got I'll send you details of the init script crash.

I created a new bootable usb using rufus and booted the target netbook from it. It looked good for a little while, then the machine hung at "Reached target Basic System".

I pressed escape and the machine went into the usual load mode with a coloured Centos 7 (Core) line running along the bottom of the screen. Soon the machine dropped into command line mode advising that there were problems and advising me to run journalctl. I copied journalctl on to another usb. I have underlined and bolded the error mesages from the original journal.

BlackMagic commented 10 years ago

The journal - which is in RTF mode so I could highlight the error messages - hasn't come through. Where can I send it to so you can read the error messages?

I'm afraid that what happens during the installation process has to do with CentOS more than Rufus, and I hope you can understand that I can't really provide dedicated support for the installation of the many Linux distributions that exist out there.

Unfortunately, developers who design a Linux installation process do not always take into account that an ISO may be converted to an USB drive using a third party method, so there's no guarantee that the post boot process will work. Maybe you should try to take this issue to the CentOS forums, where they may have an idea of what you can do. They are the specialists for what will make their install process work.

BlackMagic commented 10 years ago

I understand your position. However, if Process A (rawrite) transfers an iso to a usb and the usb installs properly, but Process B (rufus) transfers the same iso to the same usb and the usb doesn't install properly it is reasonable to assume that Process B is faulty.

The issue is academic to me as I got the desired result using rawrite. Thanks for your assistance.

pbatard commented 10 years ago

Different processes produce different results. Without looking at it, I can see quite a few reasons for rawwrite to work (specific disk ID, deviation from standard syslinux, etc.) whereas Rufus wouldn't.

What I hope you can understand however is that the CentOS people only have to care about their process of choice, and ensure that it work for a single distribution. In general, this is fairly easy to accomplish and doesn't require a lot of involvement.

On the other hand, a generic tool such as Rufus has to try to work with ALL Linux distributions out there. Overall, it does a pretty good job as the ones that fail to work with Rufus are rare. But trying to cater to the ones that do custom stuff in their boot or installation process, as CentOS appears to do, is not really something that can be achieved from a free application that is being developed by a single developer in his limited spare time.

Also, Rufus does support raw-writing (what it calls DD-Image mode). If the ISO is compatible with this mode, which would seem to be the case for CentOS (haven't tested), you can simply disable ISO mode (Alt-I) and you should be able to get the installation to work.

Thus, I would say that your statement that Process B is faulty is most likely factually incorrect - you can probably make process B work if you use the right option, as it's not the default one...

I'll give your (Alt-I https://github.com/pbatard/rufus/wiki/FAQ#Power_keysCheat_modes) suggestion a try over the weekend and let you know the result. It is quite time consuming when things go wrong, as they did yesterday with a brand-new usb that crashed half-way through the rufus iso-to-usb build. The usb became unwriteable and I spent several hours trying to make it writeable again, all wasted time in the end as I had to chuck the usb in the bin and get another one.

I've attached the Centos journal from the faulty build, encapsulating the Centos error messages in ===== lines. It seems there was a problem allocating disk drives. -- Logs begin at Thu 2014-10-09 03:58:29 UTC, end at Thu 2014-10-09 04:01:51 UTC. -- Oct 09 03:58:29 localhost systemd-journal[84]: Runtime journal is using 8.0M (max 99.6M, leaving 149.4M of free 988.0M, current limit 99.6M). Well, if the CentOS process relies on unique IDs, then it wasn't designed in a generic way and using a tool like Rufus will not work with it outside of image mode. Unfortunately, this looks like a pure CentOS issue - If they decided to lock their installation process, they will also have to be the one to make it generic.

I'll be closing this issue then.

pbatard commented 9 years ago

Reopening this issue, as I believe the fix for #394 should also make CentOS 7.0 work.

pbatard commented 9 years ago

There is a BETA for 1.4.12 now available here that should fix this problem. Please test and feel free to reopen the issue if that is not the case.

BlackMagic commented 9 years ago

Thank you. I'll test it in the next 24 hours. MJR.
