a few minor improvements #5

Hi, Peter. First of all, I wanted to thank you for your excellent article on how to use Fundamental data in zipine. That helped me a lot.

I've been tinkering around with your code recently and finally was able to make it running on my local zipline environment(python 3.5, pandas==0.18) today. I'm by no means an expert on python programming. Just wanted to make a few improvements to your code so that it's more robust and easier to use.
