Works in other games by the way.

turning it off results in a device lost, which directinput does not handle, so
dont do it.

No, I mean Hotline Miami has an option in-game to turn on xbox controller
support (it doesnt recognize it until then). And either turning it in-game
while my controller is connected, or turning it and later connecting gamepad
and adding emulator files and starting the game results in freezing.

You are not using the correct settings,
Read the wiki's https://code.google.com/p/x360ce/wiki/GameCompatibilityList

Ok, I downloaded GDB from that page, changed exe file name to HotlineMiami.exe,
because that's how it is called on GOG version, as I said before, force
feedback is off, hookmask in both x360ce and GDB file is 0x00000002
(compatibility). With controller plugged in and emulator files game freezes on
start, without emulator files it works. I don't know and could not find any
other settings that I can change to get different results, that's why I am
asking for help.

Same Problem as Thread Starter - Freeze on start.
OS: Windows 8.1 (Build 9600)
EXE Name: HotlineMiami.exe
Controller Settings: HookMask=2 and FF off in x360ce.ini.
Controller: Gioteck SC-1
I've got a couple of working Revs noted but no logs because it simply refuses
to spit 'em out. I'll sum up my testing thus far.
(All using 32-bit versions for reference)
r584 VS2012 (bundled with x360ce.exe) - Works but Down Axis on RStick triggers
same action as L Trigger.
r766 VS2012 - Working without axis bug
r789 VS2010 (tested for comparison with 848) - Same as r766 VS2012
r848 VS2010 (couldn't find a 2012 build) - Crash on startup with controller
enabled ingame.
r1151 VS2012 (Unofficial EmuCR Build - done as a testing point for 848 >
Revisions) - Same as r848 VS2010
So for now i'd personally say that some point past r789 Hotline Miami broke so
for now use either r766 or r789. that's just from what i've tested though.
On the logs - Like I said i'd have tried to supply log files but none were
being produced when i changed Log=0 to Log=1 and running after saving changes.
Enabling console and running on r848 did only get up to axis detection and
didn't say anything more after so i'm not sure what to make of it.

Scratch that on the logs, they were being stored in the logs folder in
programdata/x360ce for r848 but for 1151 they were being stored in same
directory as the game. not sure if that difference is due to revision or
compile. either way, a couple of logs to throw your way.

I can confirm, works for me with r789. If someone later stumbles upon this
issue, I attached r789 to this comment.
