Actually... it might be even simpler.
If "three-tap-to-toggle-keyboard" could work even when the keyboard was locked,
hey presto.
The reason that the keyboard has to be locked is that double-tapping a word, or
tapping the command line, brings the keyboard back up. "Three-tap" was never an
issue... so maybe if that worked regardless of lock-status?

Fixed in r348.
You can use triple-tap to toggle kbd even when the keyboard is locked.
Works in portrait or landscape mode. Keyboard glyph stays red, but loses / if
shown while locked. Bringing up dialogs or switching to notes screen and back
will autohide kb.
