*sigh* Apple sucks.

Now that 2.1 is out for the iPhone, I've been able to test this. I haven't
been able to find anyway around it.
The directories for other apps are completely unreadable by Frotz.
I figured out a hack to tell if another file exists if you know its filename
inside another app's folder, but no
way to actually read the file.
For now, people will have to resort to using the IFDb browser to retrieve their
Infocom files. :-(
I'm looking at adding in a mini ftp server or something to allow transfer to
frotz without having to write the
computer-side software, but that'll take some time, and it totally sucks I have
to do this.
Apple sucks.

If you download Infocom files from, say, zshare via the IFDb browser,
theoretically
they'll still work, yeah?
I could test this on 2.1 myself of course, but I've heard dodgy things about 2.1
being buggy and want to wait a few days.

Ugh. I was enjoying the original Zork games until the 2.1 update.

Yes, if you download from inside Frotz, using zshare.net or any web server you
can host your files on, it still
works fine in 2.1.
By the way, joselsanda -- if you go to the Bookmarks in the built-in Browser,
the last bookmark actually links to
a site which hosts the Infocom Zork games. You can download them directly
from the IFDB Browser.
You need to select the 'DOS' download links, which are ZIP files. Frotz will
automatically extract the story files
form the zip files and install them.

Thanks for clearing that up.
The isolated sandbox mentality is actually good for security and basically
preventing
the iPhone becoming like a WinMo phone, so in the long run it's sound. It's an
enormous shame that there's no way to make provision for apps like Frotz,
though.

Sweet, so the zshare transfers should still work? Good. I'll actually go ahead
and
try upgrading now.

I am having a hard time liking Apple right now. I understand why they felt the
need
to do this, but could they have at least supplied the developers with the
ability to
add a very basic ftp server in their programs through the SDK. Has Apple
mentioned
helping developers with this problem?

No, no help from Apple. They haven't even acknowledged that they took away
this functionality to my
knowledge.
I've been looking at the FTP RFCs trying to figure out the minimum bit I'd need
to implement to get a working
ftp server. It's not fun at all and not what I want to be working on. (I'm
thinking of charging 0.99 to recoup the
time I have to spend on stupid issues like this.)

@spathiwa
In comment 6 you gave me instructions for downloading the original Zork games
using the last bookmark in
the buit-in browser. Not sure I follow that. If you're talking about the IFDB
browser I'm not sure what you
mean when you say "the last bookmark actually links to a site which hosts the
Infocom Zork games". If you
get a chance to expand on that, great.
And, regarding Comment 11, I'd fork over some cash for the ability to connect
to something that lets me get
old Infocom games on the iPod. Just don't make it look like a Podcasting
application or they'll yank it from the
store ;-)

joelsanda: Sorry, it's actually the 2nd to last bookmark.
Go to 'Browse IFDB', press the magnifying glass icon to open the URL entry, hit
the blue bookmarks icon, scroll to
the bottom and tap the 2nd to last entry (which has 'infocom' in the URL).
On the page which loads, there's a blue Downloads box in the bottom right.
Click the 'DOS' link (which really links to a zip file) for each of the Zork 1,
2, and 3 entries.

Good luck with the FTP implementation. I would be willing to pay a couple
dollars for frotz.

spathiwa: much appreciated. Brass lantern now in hand :-)
Yeah ... if you charge for a version with FTP access consider me in.

Is there a similar option to allow install of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The
Galaxy?
Original comment by miller...@gmail.com

@miller169:
Alas, no there is not. All the Infocom titles are still under copyright by
Activision. Since Activision rereleased
the Zork titles for free for some publicity event a few years ago, the owner of
that site felt comfortable enough
that he would not be prosecuted for hosting the Zork files (although he doesn't
actually have a legal right to
redistribute them). No other titles have been released for free by
Acitivsion, so no one's been brave enough to
risk hosting them.

I'm trying to upload my infocom catalog to my iphone and I tried the zshare.net
thing. However, when I put the
URL in the search bar of IFDB, nothing happens. It says nothing is found and I
cannot download the zipped
games. Any advice on what I am doing wrong? Much thanks!

I've zipped up mt Infocom files, and went to zshare, but Frotz tells me there
are no
usable files in my archive. Amy ideas would be helpful.

I just submitted a new version that supports direct file transfer using FTP, so
you won't need to mess with web
servers/zshare to transfer files to Frotz anymore. It's awaiting approval by
Apple.

For the record you can download the Hitchhiker's Guide from Douglas Adams' web
page:

One of my favorites... though most of them are ;)
