It might be good to include a manifest of sorts in a hidden location with all backups. This manifest could contain information such as:

The version of kin used to generate the backup
SHA1 hashes of all included files for integrity checks (do backups need to be verified periodically to detect corruption?)

The manifest could also be PGP-signed so people can verify that backups haven't been tampered with.
