Starting with pdf 1.6, opentype font can be embedded into PDF documents. At the time, only opentype/truetype and opentype/CFF technology were available. With the introduction of variant font, opentype/CFF2 are now available on the font market, which is currently not supported by the PDF standard.

The CCF2 table removed some information that were repeated into other tables and now can't be used as a standalone font program. It now requires pretty much the same base table - cmap, head, hhea, hmtx, maxp - as a opentype/truetype font to retrieve font information in order to works properly, which makes me wonder if using CIDFontType2 for opentype/CFF2 would be a viable solution or perhaps introducing a new subtype.

As an outcoming of the dedicated session "All things text, fonts and Unicode" at the Symposium on Advancing the PDF Imaging Model, work has already begun into considerations for updating future PDF font capabilities covering color, transparency, animation, etc. within the PDF Association's Imaging Model TWG. Parked accordingly.
