Whoa. We have to think about this. It is good to have a ticket to have space for discussion, but let's phrase it in a way that it is an option, idea, and not that we are doing it for sure. To provide a space for people to raise concerns and safely discuss. Now it feels like a decision has already been made.

Y-combinator can be a good idea, because we can learn a lot, but I am not sure if you can study and be in the combinator. I think not. This might not be a problem if we find a team who would like to go there and work, while others work part-time/volunteer/advise.

Y-combinator is a good idea to go to learn how to do an organization and learn how to organize ourselves in the real world. Maybe it is a suitable goal in two years, when we would like to become self-sustainable and independent. So for PeerLibrary I somehow see that first two years could be done as part of UC Berkeley with grants. And when we get enough traction and we make technologically enough progress, we go and create a non-profit and being in Y-combinator could help us how to create such a non-profit.

(Assign milestones when you are opening new tickets.)

I have applied to YC twice. I can provide some insights on my experiences there. Yes, I agree with @mitar that we should have a conversation about whether or not we want to be involved with that when we have to cross that bridge.

You're totally right Mitar- non-definite name re-posted!

I understand its role in an org better from this explanation- and looking into it further, I def jumped the gun there...I'm guessing tabling it for later in the year/next year is a good idea...

mitar commented 9 years ago

I modified title a bit. So that it is more of a "topic", not so much action. So this ticket serves the purpose of discussing things about us any y-combinator.

raaswol commented 9 years ago

okay, i'm actually against this now. :-/

It's too impersonal and profit driven.

raaswol commented 9 years ago

Can I close this ticket? Any objections?

mitar commented 9 years ago

We do not have to. It is filled under "Ideas for the future" which is a milestone for exactly such tickets. Ideas we might want to discuss, but we have not yet decided about them. I do not see the need to rush with closing it.
