This does not add any feature and it should be usable in the same way as previously. Very minor functionality is added, mostly for diagnostics.

why is this PR so big? I think it fixes some pretty crucial bugs, it should be merged into master asap?

Travis is still failing, returning the same error. I am going to merge anyway, we can fix this later
