Difficult to add paths to iBrain via a Windows machine #6

Closed tstoeger closed 9 years ago

when opening the path-settings file (which is the first occasion where users interact with iBrain) in Windows (using default text editor), the paths become concatenated (instead of being shown beneath each other).

This contrasts iBrain_Current, which was used during the last years.

Absence of line breaks makes it very difficult to interact and add paths (unless one knows that it can be circumvented by using a special text-editor, which is compatible with unix/linux line-breaks)

Please replace the .txt association to use a better text editor.

Smart text editors like SciTE, Notepad++, and hundreds of others can do so much better than notepad.exe, which does not understand unix/linux line-breaks. Do not use it.

In order to have everyone adapt easily, I strongly disagree.

There should be no risk of not being able to add projects to iBrain (e.g.: if someone does not know about the different line breaks and text-editors or if a compatible text-editor is absent - e.g.: if it has not been installed and set up as default text editor on the computers of every microscope - also the default text editor on common lab computers does not support these line breaks).

If the first (and most frequent) interaction with iBrain is much more difficult than it has been in the past, it causes unnecessary human frustration. The corresponding file of iBrain_Current (used in last years) appears to be formatted differently since it causes no problem.

Ideally using iBrain_Brutus should be as easy as possible. Thus we will get much more feedback and iBrain"s modules/tools are as (tested and thus) stable as possible for the migration to UZH. Also everyone will be much more happy about iBrain, if it is easy to use.

solved. made a copy of path.txt from iBrain_Current and replaced the content of the lines by the lines (but not linebreaks) of path.txt from iBrain_Brutus. Now path.txt of iBrain_Brutus can also be easily viewed and edited on any Windows machine (also the reformatted path.txt is successfully detected and used by iBrain_Brutus). (also tested addition and removal and deactivation of individual paths)
