I tried to open an image 16000x16000 1bpp (32Mb total) that for some reason was able to bring down my Linux 64 bit with 4Gb of RAM. I also found that the image can be VERY small to make this happen, just creating a file "test.pbm" with as content "P4 16000 16000\nThis is a test" enough to have the viewer trying to show a huge image (even if the bits are not even present in the file).

After starting the viewer the mouse cursor was not moving normally, keyboard was unresponsive and connecting from another PC via SSH to try to kill the process took more than one minute. After long I was able to break it but I had to reboot to get the PC to a normal speed state...

I can confirm this issue. I haven't pinned down the exact cause, but by running a slideshow consisting of photographs in various shapes and sizes produce the above mentioned symptoms to the letter after a few weeks uptime.
