can you add a screenshot to understand the issue?
you can get moar themes here: http://gnome-look.org/index.php?xcontentmode=101
OK, I found how to fix. For some reason the window controls are defined to be WinMe.
How to fix: Click on System->Preferences->Appearance. Than choose the Customize option and click on the Window Border Tab. Click on window border of your liking.

Hmm... sorry for going nuts here ... I've just noticed that my solution is very partial.
I installed evince-gtk from the debian repositories in order no to get all the gnome-dependencies. Now I have very upgly evince, which does not get themes from Mate. Other GTK apps look also partially integrated. It seems like a very confused GTK desktop. I tried restarting by logging out and logging in again, but I'm still stuck with Evince which looks very ugly. Can someone confirm that?
wheezy's evince-gtk is gtk3, so you need a theme that ships both gtk2 and gtk3 styles... try the Aldabra theme included in mate-themes package.
ah, MATE atril is the GNOME evince fork :-)
@stefano-k , wow thanks for the quick reply! ATRIL looks way way better than evince :-) Howevrer, just thinking out loud. Do "we" really need to fork all the gnome apps? do we have enough men-power to maintain all these apps ???
also, your theme regarding gtk-3.0 and gtk-2.0 works, evince with the Aldabara is also nicer.
just realized that the issue I opened on that is a dupe:
https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-themes/issues/13
as of 1.4, the TraditionalOK theme should work with both GTK2 and GTK3 apps.
Hi Everyone, I just installed MATE from the tridex repo's. Great job! Everything looks and feels nice. However, one little issue is that icon on the top right of windows (close, minimize, restore window) look ugly like windows 95, and don't match the themes. I have mate-themes installed, but that doesn't seem to help.
Thanks, Oz
