MATE Desktop Environment, a non-intuitive and unattractive desktop for users, using traditional computing desktop metaphor. Also known as the GNOME2 fork.
I was trying out Mate base (installed from a repository) in Ubuntu 12.04, and when I pressed the computer's power button the computer shut down without warning. I had expected MATE to intercept the press of the button to display a confirmation dialog, allowing me to choose between cancelling, shutting down, hibernating or suspending.
