Saving gifs is not possible #50

Saving gifs to camera roll with the save-button in contextmenu is not possible. It actually doesn't do anything. Telegram version 3.9.1.

AlexanderPlaza commented 8 years ago

Hey TedStriker,

Actually it appears to save the gif in the gif section of the stickers prompt. If you go to post a ticker on a chat, you will first start with your most recently used ones. You will see a button called "GIF". Any Gifs you have saved will appear there.

tedstriker commented 8 years ago

Thanks for the hint! I expected "save" to behave like "save" on pictures. Maybe a "bookmark" describes the function better? What do you think? Besides that, a "real" save button would be great.

AlexanderPlaza commented 8 years ago

Hey TedStriker,

No problem! I expected the same but it makes sense on iOS since there is no great way to actually save a gif properly on there (As far as I know anyways.)

If you require saving a gif however, I recommend the following in the meantime.

1)Save the gif to your listed of "saved" gifs. 2)Send the gif image to yourself in your chat that has your username 3)Open telegram desktop, proceed to save the gif as a mp4. 4)Profit

Glad I could clarify that for you!

actually iOS cam roll able to store GIF but didn't play it. It would be nice if Telegram also support to save GIF onto cam roll. screenshot https://imgur.com/a/2w0cL

@AlexanderPlaza

If you require saving a gif however, I recommend the following in the meantime.

I would like to be able download .gif as .mp4 in Telegram iOS app (in fact .gifs are stored in Telegram server as .mp4 because space issues), to forward them through Whatsapp as video file, for instance. Are you thinking about add this feature soon?

Thank you! :D

tedstriker commented 7 years ago

@AlexanderPlaza Thanks for the workaround. Anyways I'd like to ask for the intuitive feature that 'save' means 'save' and not bookmark. @WyRe I'd consider this functionality out-of-scope. There are already apps, that are able to do this ;)

jfernandz commented 7 years ago

@tedstriker to download .gif (.mp4) stored in Telegram servers? What app do that?

tedstriker commented 7 years ago

@WyRe there's no app doing all those steps at once. Download the .gif like AlexanderPlaza explained and convert it with one of many "gif to video" apps on the AppStore. What I'm trying to say is, that we can't even save the .gif to the camera roll from within the telegram app at the moment. Talking about file type conversion is a complete different feature, that might build on top of the "download gif to camera roll" functionality. And IMHO, file type conversion isn't something I would expect a messenger app to do.

jfernandz commented 7 years ago

@tedstriker as I've explained, .gifs files are stored in Telegram servers as .mp4 format, in fact, Android app allows you to download that .mp4 file to forward it through any app what do you want. So I don't wanna convert any file I'm just asking for to add Telegram iOS app the possibility of download these files.

Sorry for the misunderstood. :D

rebroad commented 7 years ago

Is this issue likely to be fixed? How do I save gifs as gifs (or convert the mp4s back to gifs) please?

jfernandz commented 7 years ago

@rebroad you should read the complete post.

tedstriker commented 7 years ago

@WyRe oh alright. I didn't know the files are converted to mp4s on telegrams servers. Thank you for that clarification. Besides the file format it seems we all want the same: Being able to download these files to our iOS devices instead of bookmarking them.

JohnReddyZhang commented 6 years ago

The workaround seems a little redundant actually, it would be great if we could simply save them to camera roll as gif or mp4 whatever. Thanks!

@AlexanderPlaza Now iOS support gif image, will telegram support for saving gif to iOS Photos?

mxwiz commented 6 years ago

For this I made bot for myself, you can use it too if you want - https://t.me/EasyGifBot It is in alpha test now :) but you can send gif to him ))

AlexanderPlaza commented 6 years ago

@TennyZhuang I am not sure if there will be telegram support for this. The reason being is because I am not a developer for this project. I just happen to be well versed in it's usage.

danhrahal commented 6 years ago

@mxwiz

Thanks for taking the implementation of this absolutely OBVIOUS feature into your own hands. It’s hard enough to take my friends from Whatsapp to Telegram, but not having stuff like this is just irritating...

Anyway, the link the bot sent me haven’t worked, I get a 404.

mxwiz commented 6 years ago

@danhrahal Hi, I have just checked and all is working, may be something with your DNS server? Do you able to open the site's main page? http://easygif.whoiam.in/ If no, you DNS server don't know my host, if yes please make sure that link you open is full like http://easygif.whoiam.in/gif/ca0b32baf0c7259b2ba64c9d498cc44e
