compilation warnings #7

not an issue per se but there are quite a few compilation warnings in chronicle code that can be sorted out.

I have done a static analysis and reduced the number of warnings.

There is still a number of "Sun proprietary API and may be removed in a future release" for which there is not a public replacement.
