This was sort of the obvious patch to write. I'm pretty rusty with C and I haven't written any Postgres internals before so I suspect I may have made some errors of either style or substance. Let me know if you'd like this fixed up at all.

@petere anything obviously wrong with the patch? (I would guess I probably didn't execute the upgrade to version 1 from version 0 correctly.) Happy to revise given even incoherent and cursory feedback.
