Make code compatible with Python 2.6+ and Python 3 #25

These changes make it work with both Python 2 (2.6+) and Python 3.

Sorry for discovering this PR so late. This would be a very nice contribution. I have a comment (check it out in the commit comments). Please respond to that and then I'll take a look to make sure it works.
