The directory of the data JSON as stated in the UG is incorrect; the UG states that the file is to be saved as data.json, yet in reality the file is saved as addressbook.json. Advanced users may catch on that addressbook.json is probably the save file, but this may not be the case for new users who try to edit the save file directly.
