It is unclear what the --update option is meant to do.

Please explain in detail. It could cover at least:

rerunning the same query at a later date and (probably) adding more entries (requires -q)
downloading additional types of files (e.g. --pdf could download PDF files to an exising repository)
re-running an interrupted download
