Switch from Karma to Web Test Runner, and ES6 module exports #97

The Karma test runner is broken, but is in this Pull Request replaced with Modern Web Test Runner.

Also this Pull Request switches from CommonJS to ES6 module exports, which will be a breaking change in how the library should be integrated into other projects.

A devcontainer setup for developing in github codespaces is also added, providing a fully configured development environment.
