Snowden live at the Internet Days in a conversation arranged by Amnesty International - IND16

we were trying to substitute the best judgment and ideas of 330 million Americans with the judgment of a few officials

this doesn't mean that our initial values will be sort of a overthrown and cast away by these people come in but will be challenged in new ways will be reached by new perspectives and we'll have a conversation that gets broader and richer with each passing year

the central argument here is that the antonyms the opposite of the word privacy is security or the opposite of securities privacy that privacy is this threat that's placing us in danger but that's not actually how it works the absence of privacy is not the presence of security and the presence of security is not the absence of privacy rather the absence of privacy is the presence of censorship

privacy is the right to progress privacy is what allows us to evolve because privacy protects those who are a little bit different

it's a false measure because every point of progress in human history every advance of human rights the expansion of dignity that we all enjoy today has begun not only is something that was different but in many cases a movement that was in fact illegal

uncertainty is the price of democracy that unpredictability is not a weakness it's a strength that is the thing that allows us to evolve

absolutely yeah it's it's hard to think of a better example of uncertainty than Donald Trump as president

we should think about which companies we want to support and we should have mechanisms to understand how these companies are operating the kind of decisions they are making and the social costs that are being created as a consequence of their operations

we can think of librarians as a professional class that are dedicated to the ascertain moment of facts the familiarity of effects

I don't care

if I get hit by a bus or a drone or dropped out of an airplane tomorrow you know what it doesn't actually a matter that much to me because I believe in the decisions that I've already made

my position is that whistleblowers are democracies safeguard of last resort in an open society

when you tell someone what you've done you can never take that back

i'll see you there and until then stay free
