Hi,

First of all, thank you for creating this wonderful plotting library!

As an electrical engineer, it would be really useful to be able to create Smith Chart plots, similar to the MatLab plots that are displayed on this page:

http://www.mathworks.com/access/helpdesk/help/toolbox/rf/f2-999699.html

The Smith Chart is essentially a unit circle, with a grid that is drawn as a conformal mapping of the entire complex plane into the unit circle. I found a quick guide on how to draw the smith chart here:

http://www.siart.de/lehre/smithdgr.pdf

I imagine it could be implemented as an axis environment similar to "loglogaxis", where traces could be added as series of points in the range [-1..1 ; -1..1].

Would it be possible to include such functionality in a future release?

Søren.

Hi Soren, thank you for your interest in pgfplots and the feature request!

I guess it might be possible to add such charts, especially since the next release will a public API for adding new plot types anyway.

What I am not completely sure about is whether automated tick placement will work as for log plots or linear plots... maybe after some additions here. The emphasize is on "automated", a manual placement should not pose great problems.

But the main problem is that I am not familiar with such visualizations at all - perhaps you can mail me at ludewich@users.sourceforge.net and provide example data + output?

Best regards

Christian

Hi Christian,

Thank you for answering my request.

I have emailed you example data and output :)

Best Regards

Hello Soren,

Since the unstable version now contains a usable smitchart lib, I close this request -- knowing that there are still ways to improve the library.

best regards

Christian
