It would be useful to have a constant plot handler with marks in the middle of the horizontal line, in a similar way to 'steps-mid' in matplotlib:

Hi Miguel,

thanks for the suggestion! I have added the requested feature. It will make its way into the next pgfplots stable (which will hopefully be released before the end of 2011).

I would appreciate it if you would take a look into http://pgfplots.sourceforge.net/pgfplots\_unstable.pdf section "4.4.3 Constant Plots" to verify that it does what you expected (the .pdf will be updated until Dec 29).
