I am not sure if this is not the same as the feature request as https://sourceforge.net/p/pgfplots/feature-requests/19/, but I would like to have options for only setting the x and y labels once centered. That is for the x labels centered below/above all groupplots, and for the y labels centered left/right of all grouplots.

It seems that is the same feature request as was asked at http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/117759/create-x-and-y-label-which-overlaps-for-multiple-plots. And luckily it seems that Jake also has provided a solution (http://tex.stackexchange.com/a/117935/95441) which you hopefully simply can adopt.

I've been using Jake's solution successfully for quite a while now. What it currently doesn't do, naturally, is interact with units or allow one to set the style, e.g. to change the font size (although one can work around that by preceding the actual label text by the corresponding font-size-change-directive).
