Hm. Sounds reasonable. I have never really used error bars, especially not in log coords, so the actual implementation might be no use-case.
I suppose that you cannot force the current implementation to behave as desired. I will convert your request into a feature request (it is not a bug since pgfplots works as designed).

Hi,
I was trying to represent some error bars in a logarithmic scale and found some weird effects, such as asymmetric error bars.
According to this, to represent error bars correctly on a log plot, one should use differential analysis, so that absolute errors become relative errors and the error bars are symmetric again.
Is there any way to achieve this with the current implementation of pgfplots? Can we expect this to be implemented so that error bars are correctly plotted when using logarithmic scales?
