I've noticed in PhanxChat that when you enable the setting to allow blizzard to open new chat tabs for bnet whispers, there's no name in the tab. When I disable PhanxChat, the name shows properly.

PhanxChat doesn't have any options that are meant to affect Battle.net whisper tabs... can you please check the options panel and clarify exactly which option you're talking about?

Sure, it is not the PhanxChat option. Its a Blizzard option. Interface > Social > New Whispers/New Battle.net Whispers/New Battle.net Conversations.
I have new whispers set to In-line, new bnet whispers to 'Both' (in-line and new tab) and new bnet conversations to 'both'. This causes the tab to get created, but once it is there, PhanxChat doesn't seem to like the display of the name of that tab.
Alternatively, I've also noticed that if PhanxChat does find the name, it displays it off to the side. Here's a pic:
