I have thought about adding a sidebar to Minder in the past; however, I don't think I will implement this any time soon and here's why.
In elementary OS, there is a desire to make tools that do one thing and do it well. Minder is all about creating mind maps and exporting them those into other formats for further processing, if necessary. Adding a sidebar is essentially creating a file manager that is only useful to Minder. Essentially merging two applications into one. Since every OS already has a file manager built into it with almost all of the functionality that you described, it doesn't seem necessary to replicate this functionality within Minder.
I know that there are a lot of great applications that have this type of feature in them, and the experience is usually pretty good, it is feature bloat and doesn't make the process of creating mind maps any easier.
With all of that said, two of your bullets (ability to customize storage location and issues with image management) are definitely issues that I have thought about improving. Both of which don't require a sidebar. Those will be addressed sometime in the near future.
I understand you very well, and I understand the point of view of the eos: The problem is that the file manager in the system is concerned with all files, and it has many features related to the matter, the Sidebar will borrow only a few properties, just as Notes-Up It will be very useful because it only pertains to the app's extension files and also the ability to create a personal library. The command for folders and subfolders is not necessary to be actual folders in the system only just definitions in a file as XML. Library organization will be easy and fast, It will give you more focus on the work related to the app. The Sidebar will give you also more flexibility in dealing with other additions as favorites in the library, and you can add tags and labels for Outliner directly.
In the end, the system philosophy and your opinion may be the correct one, and maybe my use of other desktop environment made me look from another point of view
I understand your point of view.
I implemented this functionality for my needs. A simple explorer with the files being by default in the last location.
I think the app needs an organizer too The organizer will be for the following things:
