VO reads last letter of last word in bulleted lists #174

Test device MacBook Air (m1 chip)

Operating System MacOS 12.4

Browser Safari and using VO

Problem description Seen when testing https://github.com/phetsims/qa/issues/811 but not sim specific. I also noticed it with GFLB published:

When using VO keys + B to read through the description from the beginning, the last letter of the last word in a bulleted list will be read aloud. This doesn't occur if I use VO keys + right arrow. The extra letter is also not seen in a11y view.

@terracoda have you ever seen this before?

terracoda commented 2 years ago

I have never noticed this. I have an M1 chip, too, I think. Will check tomorrow my macOS version.

I just tested with macOS 11.6.2 + Safari and I did not see this happen while reading with VO + B command. Ill bring this up during meeting today and we can decide what to do next.

@Nancy-Salpepi can you please test this again after doing a full reboot of the computer that you saw this on? I am wondering if this is persistent or possibly a fluke?

Nancy-Salpepi commented 2 years ago

@jessegreenberg I cleared my history and restarted my mac--it still happens. I thought perhaps it was because I was using macOS 12.4 and you were using 11.6 so I then tried my desktop which has macOS 10.15.7 + safari. There was still an issue but it was a little different. When reading lists, it would cut off the last letter and say it separately instead of repeating the last letter as I saw in my original post.

These issues only occur with lists when using VO keys + B.

Here is a video from my desktop (It is too noisy in my house at the moment so no sound, but you can read what VO is saying)

Thanks @Nancy-Salpepi. This is just...so strange. One more check, can you see if this happens in a a case outside of a PhET sim like this example? https://jsfiddle.net/unyg7otq/show. It will help identify if there is anything we can do about this.

Nancy-Salpepi commented 2 years ago

@jessegreenberg the jsfiddle was cute :) I saw something similar to what I reported with my desktop even though I used my MacBook Air. Very weird.

I got you sound this time too! https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/87318828/175123202-6290fa40-db72-4a68-a2a7-5fe80650ded0.mov

Excellent, thanks @Nancy-Salpepi! Still strange, but at least we know it is not caused by PhET code. I will probably create a bug report for this and submit it to Apple and add to our list of known screen reader bugs.

terracoda commented 2 years ago

I agree. This really strange. I did a little googling today, but did NOT find anything yet.
