sim essentially locks up when shown after being hidden for a long while #78

The sim essentially appears to lock up when it has been hidden for a for a while, such as when it is open on a tab and then the user opens a different tab and then switches back. I'm fairly certain that the case where a very large dt is passed into the model isn't being handled well.
