IRB protocol: Students and parents will be informed of the opportunity for volunteering for interviews through newsletters, handouts, or flyers. We will recruit potential interview subjects by informing parents and students at schools as well as at common local gathering places for students - for example athletic clubs or public festivals. In the cases where a gathering is run by an organization, we will first inform the organization of our work and obtain their permission to inform parents and students of the opportunity to participate as a subject in our study. Other potential places include public venues, like city parks and public festivals, where no formal permission is needed. We will distribute the attached flyer, answer questions, and collect names and emails of interested participants.

Also talked to North Boulder Rec. Need to email Matt Gazdik for his OK. If he's OK, Keely Miller (head of gymnastics) said that she'd be willing to hand out flyers to the kids.

@kathy-phet met with some groups who might be able to assist with national recruitment. We'd like to amend the google form to ask if a student is 13+ so they can sign themselves up, and add a field for student email if they are 13+.

7/14/22 Meeting

• Still some concerns with diversity for in-person recruitment
• How will we maintain these lists of volunteers?
• How do we handle the fact that a large number of people might "sign up" and only a percentage will ever even be contacted.
• Need BOTH in-person and remote, since youngest kids (<13 yo) should be in-person
• In Mexico, we could do interviews, but not with the intent to do research
• Diana could potentially pay and submit as part of her invoice
• Diana could do some interviews in Spanish and share takeaways in English with lead designers, just can't do research
• If we're only doing interviews for "quality assurance" or "quality improvement" and not research (paper, poster, presentation, etc.), we don't really need to follow the IRB
• If we do "non-research" interviews, we would still collect parent (media) consent and student assent, but video files would be stored with media (not research). Could use these video files for media uses.
• Could we have the option for no compensation? Some programs we recruit through might prefer that. @BLFiedler just had a new consent form approved for this.

More ideas for recruiting:

• Permission could happen at Rutgers, similar to CU
• @matthew-blackman has grad students in the spring semester who are teaching who could potentially share the opportunity...
• @matthew-blackman has a friend with a summer technology camp that could be a potential source of volunteers, also a connection to a robotics after-school program (grade 3 - college)
• Some school district websites have announcements posted about external programs and activities - CC will reach out to her school district to see if she can learn more about how to get permission and a means for spreading the word
• CU outreach programs? (e.g. PISEC)

@amanda-phet is going to follow up with the Boulder (and other) libraries nearby, as well as the N. Boulder rec center.

@kathy-phet should review and revise the media releases we have so they are appropriate for non-research interviews.

@DianaTavares will translate the media releases and try to recruit some 5-6 year old kids for local interviews.

@kathy-phet will reach out to someone in charge of Science Discovery about handing out a flyer.

@arouinfar and @amanda-phet will review the google form we used in the past and revise it for newer recruitment- perhaps we could use one form? Add a field for how they learned about the opportunity?

@amanda-phet will make an updated flyer.
