I don't know exactly what Whirligig sorts by when it's set to sort by date, but it's not the same thing as the file explorer in Windows 10. It should be the same thing.
There should also be options in WG to sort by date of last modification, date of creation, and date of last access. They could be accessed by long-pressing on the "date" button in the UI.
