[Chapter 2 Section 10.3] The Code does not provide clarity on whether the minimum required SRI applies to the entire building envelope or to the roof areas only. #6
The Code does not provide clarity on whether the minimum required solar reflectance index (SRI) applies to the entire building envelope or to the roof areas only.
Rule
The requirements of the Code for Building Envelope Color intend to "reduce heat transfer from the outside to the inside of the building by having surfaces with high SRI."
Analysis
The SRI values on Table 5 are only applicable to metal surfaces. However, not all roofing material used for buildings are metal. The SRI is not solely dependent on color, but it may also be influenced by material, texture and other properties.
Recommendation
If the requirement only applies to the roof areas of the building, clarify that the requirement does not include the entire building envelope of the building.
If the requirement only applies to metal roof surfaces, exclude non-metal roof surfaces to comply with the requirements of the Code.
Exclude green roofs, solar panels and other related strategies to comply with the requirements of the Code.
