That's a bit odd. The virtual keyboard in the 1.1.X versions has many issues
even for
people that make it past the name input screen. I'm working on a new version,
which
will be much better in that respect. I uploaded a preview build of this, in
case you
want to try it out. It's here:
http://nethack-android.googlecode.com/files/NetHack-1.2.1-alpha.apk. It should
be
playable (for touchscreen users, much more so than the previous version), but
still
has some bugs and issues I want to sort out before officially releasing it. If
you
try it out, please let me know if you have any simple suggestions on how to
make the
virtual keyboard more useful, and let me know if it doesn't solve the issue with
entering the name.

Hello,
thank you for your quick answer and your solution =)
I've found almost no problem with the keyboard, using your latest version. I say
"almost" because, in some cases, i *think* when the phone is in portrait mode,
"Enter" sometimes doesn't register properly, to validate my name. Otherwise,
it's
been great.
The keyboard is a bit sluggish sometimes, but i guess it's not your fault and
you
can't do much about it.
I have a few suggestions about the UI, too. Feel free to disregard them if they
are
not practical and/or interesting =)
I've found that "portrait" was the easiest to play, because that way the
keyboard
doesn't hide the game. However, often, the levels are too wide. This causes two
issues. The first one is that the information text spans over multiple screens,
making it impractical to read quickly the messages. The second one is that,
when you
scroll the screen to the right to see your character and surroundings, the
status
information and the messages are still aligned to the left, which means you
cannot
see them while playing.
If you could either find a way to "sticky" the status info and the messages,
much
like the keyboard remains in place while scrolling, or to "move" the TTY
display
when in landscape mode so that the keyboard doesn't hide it, it would be, i
believe,
very good.
Being able to customize more keys and/or starting options would be great
(forgive me
if this is possible already, i must admit i'm quite new to this whole android
stuff,
so maybe i didn't look hard enough to find configuration files).

I'm sorry, i've read the other reports and noticed you know/are thinking of
addressing most of what i suggest here.
May i suggest a "donation" version? =)

A lot of what was discussed here is in the new version 1.2.1.
