Help choose a name #1

Please enter your comments below. Some initial suggestions:

firehol6 fireholv6 barbican (as in a fortification) legiwall (as in a mixture of legible and firewall)

The first two show off the origins of the project but may be a little close to the original and lead to confusion later on.

johndalton commented 12 years ago

Of those choices barbican sounds best to me!

raubvogel commented 12 years ago

I too think barbican is the best of those options... even though it made me think of barbituric (acid). ;)

That said, all I want from whatever name it ends up with is that it does not contain: o net- my- or i-something or another o "EZ" in its name... anywhere

philwhineray commented 12 years ago

Had a mail from Tomas Hein (no github account) with the following observations:

  • firehol6 / fireholv6

Please do not use this name, it will lead to confusion:

  • barbican

Sounds nice, though one could read it as "Barbie Ken" or "Barbie can" (canister)

On the other hand I just learned a new word I did not know before, I did not know that this means "watch tower" and I did not even know the German equivalent "Barbakane" :)

So +1 on that.

This brought me the idea "barbfire" (like barbwire), but this name already has too many google hits.

  • legiwall (i.e. legible firewall)

It's now only legible, but also easily writable, maintainable and understandable.

But again there might be trademark issues as there are various companies named "Legi".

Maybe something like "graspwall"?

The .org domain for both these names is still available, unlike barbican.org or barbfire.org

  • "Oh, this only works with IPv6?"
  • Additionally there may be trademark issues if Costa does not  approve, but hopefully this is just a theoretical problem.

  sanewall?
philwhineray commented 12 years ago

Other ideas I brainstormed, which may or may not be usable (shouldn't be an existing name if possible, and definitely not used in the networking/firewalling arena):

fireconf fireclean/cleanfire fwcommander fwscript fireclear firechoke firemerge firebif (h-6,i-6,l-6) firemag firemult firesharp firemaster firesavvy fireplan firesmart firebar firefort firecompact/compactwall

I was going for the angle this is a simpler/saner to use

firewall. So, we can also add simplewall to the list, if it is available. On a diff note, sanewall.com and .org were available so I snatched them. If you choose to use them, I'll give them to you; we'll just need to figure out how to do the transfer.

If we were to use sanewall, I would ask a girl I know to make a

logo based on the guy in that impressionist painting, The Scream.

I do quite like sanewall.

We'll see how things pan out over the next couple of days: thanks for grabbing the domain in advance!

"Bringing sanity to your firewall!" Or some crap like that.

Sure thing; I've learned that if you have an idea for a domain

and it is available, grab it or it will be too late. Think of it as my contribution to the cause ;)

Looks like Tomas Hein have good arguments not using my favourite firehol6 name.

So I must add one too: foxywall :) All needed domains are free

  Any update?
philwhineray commented 12 years ago

Good timing I was just about to prepare one!

I think sanewall is the best name I have heard which also has a domain we can get hold of.

Could you contact Tomas (foxycode) as he is going to arrange most of the hosting. I've never transferred a domain once it's been registered before so I'm relying on you guys to come up with the best solution. Let me know if you need anything from me.

I'll do a formal announcement on Saturday all being well.

foxycode commented 12 years ago

Ok, looks like sanewall is the winner. I hoped for barbican.

I have hosting prepared, just need to point domains on my dns servers.

raubvogel: Contact me on foxycode@sunfox.cz please, I will tell you what to do

Phil: Send me please needed contact info to mail, I'll arrange domain transfer with raubvogel

foxycode commented 12 years ago

Hello guys,

I am working with new name some time preparing the website and I am definitely convinced that sanewall is not good idea. Every time I need write that name somewhere after longer time (apt, init.d), I am not able to remember name. I tell myself: "It was something-wall, what exactly was it?".

I had similar troubles when I get used firehol. But that was different, because I always remembered first letter: "Was it something with fire?" and I could then type fire and press TAB. Maybe barbican haven't exact domains free, but in my opinion is much better name for remembering.

foxycode commented 12 years ago

Maybe I am wrong because I am not native english speaking. Sane is not common word for me, fire is. Tell me how this is in your case.

Barbican as word in fact tells me nothing too, but it inspire word barb in me - barbie? or "barb wire" movie :)

philwhineray commented 12 years ago

The name seems sensible and meaningful to me, so there is definitely a language thing going on. I don't want to make it harder than it needs to be for anyone, though, just because english is a second language.

If we were to choose anything else, how do you imagine presenting it though, and through what domain?

Would "barbican, the sane firewall builder" work, and keep the domain as is?

foxycode commented 12 years ago

I can imagine barbican-firewall.org as you suggested before. It is not perfect, I know.

But if you think this is only language thing, forget my comment, we can leave it as is, I try to remember current name :)

I think better keep sanewall domain and name than having name and domain different.

philwhineray commented 12 years ago

Can we stick with it then, at least for now.

I'm sure it will be painful if we want to change in 6 months time, but I honestly think the name will make good sense to a lot of people.

Cheers Phil

philwhineray commented 12 years ago

OK www.sanewall.org now exists. Just a very basic page pointing to bug tracker etc.
