switch current counters to gauges #10

in-flight counts should be gauges, not counters. Also moved indexing to shared stats since applies to versions <1.

FWIW, this is working for me. Any reason why this hasn't been merged in yet? I'd like to base a new change on this.

There are some conflicts to merge this. If they are resolved, I will pull this in asap.

not sure what conflicts you're referring to; just rebased to your master branch & there were no conflicts; I'll push the rebase regardless in case that makes things easier for you.
