For example, Knowles (1973: 188) refers to a tone which he calls the step, in which a high level tone follows the initial rise. This is comparable to the RISE-PLATEAU which is one of the most common tones in Belfast English (Grabe et al. 2005). More systematic investigation is required if we are to understand the relationship between the prosodic system of LE and that of other English varieties.
