@maxrake You have good attention to detail so I'd appreciate a look over the docs and links etc to see if they make sense to someone that doesn't use Cargo, but you don't have to actually test if it works.
@mathew-horner I've set this up globally for myself with the source replacement to trial-run things. I think it would make sense for you to try and reproduce that setup and see if you can get a simple global configuration working for yourself using just a small demo project. Aviary itself seems to complete, so that might be suitable. It should be clear that it works because it will tell you that it uses the phylum registry when downloading.
