Video and audio not recognised

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Installed Qgismapper dependencies individually (as named in install page)
2. Installed Gather and Player plugins via plugin manager in QGIS
3. USB Webcam working with Ekiga/Guvcview. Audio recording in Sound Recorder.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expect to see the video tab(+options) in Qgis Gather - no tab visible.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
QGIS 1.4.0, Gather 0.3.1, Player 0.3, Ubuntu 9.10

Please provide any additional information below.
I do not know how to use SVN or Cmake (as per install instruction) so I
installed all the listed dependencies manually using Synaptic. My webcam is
visible to other programs but the video functionality is not accessible in
Qgismapper Gather - same for audio.

If my only option is to reinstall via SVN/Cmake could you kindly give
'hand-holding' instructions for a non-developer.

Hello... is anybody out there in Qgismapper land? If anyone associated with 
this project is able to answer my question I would really appreciate the 
courtesy of some sort of a reply - even after asking the question 10 months ago.
