emerged in this issue's comments that its not clear https://github.com/pietrop/digital-paper-edit-electron/issues/44 and people's default behaviour would be to convert to audio or video before importing into autoEdit, which is not necessary, as not only it does all of that for you, but also, you'd lose the possibility of reading the metadata from the original rushes.

autoEdit will convert your original rushes, no matter how big the file, to audio and video preview, the audio is used to send to the Speech To Text Engine, and the video is a lower resolution preview used by the app. When exporting a sequence, as EDL, XML etc.. the app will use the metadata of the original footage.
