I think it would be cool to try out. You would still be modeling the flat tree in blender though right?
That's right. I guess you could totally do it that way. Just wanted to record this idea so I didn't lose it.

Flat trees == ugly.. we could still have characters look box-like however
What if we designed the look to have a pop-up book type feel? Perhaps the levels are 3D but the background, clouds, sun, mountains, rocks, trees, snowman, etc were all just flat vertical plains.
One completely random thought I had was, what if different color trees signified something different? Green trees would knock you off, red trees could be knocked over, but with a velocity penalty, blue trees were a speed bonus. Or not. I'm just speaking off the top of my head.
Would keep our levels simple and eliminate the need for complex modeling in Blender, minus our sled guy.
