the check_network method seems to cause problem in a, for the time being, small number of cases. Rather than taking it out altogether I'd like to try to figure out the factor affecting those users.
Still, in the interim (and perhaps it can stay that way permanently) I've allowed the 'y' flag to bypass network check, so there is a workaround available to users running into the issue.
