Jake Paul would love nothing more than to be considered a boxer first and foremost. The Disney star-turned-YouTuber's reinvention inside the squared circle may not be one for boxing purists, but the 27-year-old has performed creditably enough in his 11 bouts, losing only to Tommy Fury, the Love Island star and brother of former heavyweight champion Tyson. Having started his own promotion company, MVP, the Problem Child is certain to make plenty of cash on the night and will bring plenty of new eyes to boxing with him.
Tyson is returning to the ring for the first time since retiring from boxing 19 years. The Baddest Man on the Planet cut a swathe through the heavyweight division in the late 1980s before losing his way in the 90s in a career of diminishing returns, with the odd bite thrown in. Now 58, Iron Mike must also overcome an operation to remove an ulcer that delayed this bout first time round, plus that significant three-decade age gap. At least the fight is only eight two-minute rounds, with heavy 14oz gloves, eh?
After earning legendary status in the ring as a heavyweight champion with a career that began in the 1980s, Tyson retired professionally in 2005 and then laced up his gloves to do exhibition matches for a few years. The 58-year-old's last bout was in 2020 against Roy Jones Jr., another former world champion. Paul, who's 27, has been training for months and aims to win. Their training journey is chronicled in Netflix's documentary, Countdown: Paul vs. Tyson.
On Thursday night, Tyson slapped Paul in the face during the pair's standoff at the weigh-in after the latter crawled onto stage, stepped on Tyson's foot and stood in his face. Now, fans can't wait for the bell to ring at tonight's event.
Paul and Tyson have been promoting this Netflix match-up all year, which was postponed from its original date of July 20. Broadcasting live from the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, the event will feature a series of preliminary matches before the main card on Friday night.
Ringside commentary will be provided by Roy Jones Jr., Mauro Ranallo and Rosie Perez. Sean Wheelock will serve as the rules and scoring expert with Mark Calo-oy as the referee. The heavyweight bout between Paul and Tyson will have eight rounds that last two minutes each, and is sanctioned as a professional fight by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Therefore, it will be scored, but no title is involved. Instead, these fighters are facing each other to earn money.
Making a retirement comeback, Mike Tyson is set to face Jake Paul in one of the most highly-anticipated fights of the year, at the AT and T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The weigh-in already saw its fair share of drama with Tyson slapping the YouTube celebrity. The 58-year-old weighed-in at 103.6 kgs, and Jake stood at 102.9 kgs.
Mike Tyson is returning to professional boxing for the first time in nearly two decades on Friday night in Texas. The 58-year-old former undisputed heavyweight champion is fighting YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul in a made-for-Netflix showdown expected to draw a global audience of around 300m viewers.
Heavyweight icon Tyson, 58, has not fought professionally in 19 years, but he will do so again as he faces Paul, 27, who has gone 10-1 as a pro since making his name as a YouTube star.
The Americans were due to box in July, but Tyson suffered a mid-flight ulcer flare-up, leading the bout to be delayed.
Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson airs on November 15 in AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. The main card starts at 8 p.m. ET. The main event should begin around 11:15 p.m. ET, depending on how long the undercard fights last.
Paul (10-1) has primarily fought MMA fighters. โThe Problem Childโ lost against Tommy Fury but beat boxers Andre August and Ryan Bourland handily. Tyson (50-6) last fought professionally in 2005. The 58-year-old former world champion dealt with an ulcer issue that delayed this fight.
The co-main event will see a rematch between Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, this time for undisputed super lightweight gold. The two competed in the 2022 Fight of the Year for Taylor's status as undisputed lightweight champion, which she won in a close contest.
Since that fight, Taylor (23-1) has gone 2-1, losing against Chantelle Cameron for super lightweight gold but beating her in a rematch last year. Serrano (47-2-1) has gone 5-0, becoming undisputed at featherweight while defying norms for women in boxing and competing in 12 three-minute boxing fights.
Tyson has a 50-6 record, with 44 knockouts and hasn't fought a professional bout since 2005. Meanwhile, Jake has a 9-1 record. Speaking to reporters, Jake said, "I think they're beloved fans of Mike Tyson. And I'm the new kid on the block, the disrupter, loud mouth, polarizing figure. And I've built my career as the heel. Naturally people want to root against me, and that's great for the sport of boxing."
Another title fight on the card will see Mario Barrios defending the WBC welterweight title against Abel Ramos. Barrios (29-2) won interim gold and became full-time champion after Terence Crawford was named "champion in recess." "El Azteca" has 18 wins via knockout. Ramos (28-6-2) is 2-2 in his last four fights. The 33-year-old has 22 wins via knockout.
Also on the card, India's Neeraj Goyat (18-4-2), who previously challenged Paul, takes on YouTuber and exhibition fighter Whindersson Nunes. Most Valuable Promotions' Shadasia Green (14-1) faces Melinda Watpool (7-0) for the WBO super middleweight title, the second opportunity at gold for Green.
