Is the green target velocity indicator not enough? I'm very wary of exposing too many raw numbers - they're often meaningless and take a lot of space. That's not to say we wouldn't do it if it were necessary though.
Had another think of this - the green and white velocity indicators are fine until they move off the screen.
If you're concerned about clutter on the screen, perhaps a compromise would be to have a green and white indicator on the edge of the screen that gives you an approximate idea of where the actual indicator is.
That way, as I approach a station, I can use the screen edge indicators to allow me to adjust my velocity until the main green / white indicators are back on the screen.
I like that. When the velocity indicator is not visible on the screen, and you're not very close to anything, it can be difficult to hunt that indicator down. An off-screen indicator (as used for target labels in many space sims) that lies at the edge of the view portal and basically shows the angle of the shortest turn to face the velocity indicator, would be extremely useful. One green, one white.
Don't forget indicators for targeted ships, incoming missiles etc... :-)
This should have been closed by the commits in #752, but github failed (maybe because that pull request closed two issues?)
I should be doing my job. sigh
A suggestion for those of us who choose not to use the autopilot. It would be handy if the x- y- and z- components of the ship relative velocity to the target could be displayed. This would make aligning the ship prior to docking a little easier.
I don't know if this makes sense but the relative velocities would need to be calculated from the point of view of the forward view of the ship.
