Why not use git/github for the gimp registry? #1

I bet there is a high chance that a lot of stuff is already here, so why not find a way to use git/github for the gimp registry?

What would be holding this back?

That's a great question!

I had actually proposed something like this to the GIMP team in the past but have found lukewarm support for the idea at best. I think this is mostly due to concerns about a possible SourceForge situation happening again if we use a (closed-source) service like github.

There's other options that could be used as well like gitlab I guess.

I'll bring it back up to the team again and see if we can get any traction around it.

If not officially, we could always start building something unofficially if we wanted.

That'd be nice!

GitLab is actually pretty nice and the team there is still iterating on it quickly. They provide a github page-like feature, so there is a possibility of doing something like that for a front end.

Thinking a bit further, it shouldn't only be the GIMP, but any useful script!

I will move ahead with the unofficial effort, as after speaking with @patdavid at SCaLE16x, I now understand that the gimp team will never go for github.
